I got a call today (11/7/11) from Mark that he spotted two Monarchs nectaring on a patch of Maryland Golden-aster in Catawba County just west of Hickory, NC, on I-40. A little further along he saw three more Monarchs on a patch of goldenrod in McDowell County at Exit 100.

He stopped in Henderson County, NC, near Hendersonville at a plant conservation site and found three additional Monarchs, making a total of 8 Monarchs for his drive through western NC. He also saw an impressive 30+ of Common Buckeyes and 8 Cloudless Sulphurs while in Henderson County.
