Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/11/2011

Number: 75

Many monarchs migrating to the WSW across Lavaca Bay here on the Texas midcoast this morning (Fri, 11/11/11). Altus netted four nectaring on a single short seaside goldenrod at 10:30.
We counted seventeen in the first mile coming back across the Lavaca Bay Causeway and saw about seventy-five in the half hour. Lavaca Bay was almost calm from the east and there was a good flow of at least a couple a minute on the west side of the peninsula, we did not stay and do a count. Yesterday (Thurs, 11/10/11) we saw over fifty at noon but more later in the day. We went across the Lavaca Bay Causeway at 4:30 and saw 4 monarchs flying very high to the SW. Wind NW at 10 mph, clear, 61 dF. On the peninsula to the causeway, the monarchs were already finding places to roost for the night. Found some doubles and triples on the short seaside goldenrod and even a triple on one sunflower. Four clusters in the saltcedars, one tight cluster had at least a dozen in it ... a few still flying around in the saltcedars. Two loose clusters on the thorntrees at the edge of TX35 again. This has been happening after each norther the past couple of weeks.
