Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 11/10/2011

Number: 75

Altus and I went across the Lavaca Bay Causeway at 4:30 on Thur, 11/10/11, and saw 4 monarchs flying very high to the WSW over the bay. Wind was from NW at 10 mph, clear, 61 dF. On the east side of peninsula to the causeway, Altus and I saw that the monarchs were already finding places to roost for the night. Found some doubles and triples on the short seaside goldenrod and even a triple on one sunflower as soon as we started driving along the bay's edge. We could pick out four clusters in the saltcedars, I watched one tight cluster thru binoculars and decided there were at least a dozen monarchs in it ... a few still flying around in the saltcedars. Two loose clusters on the thorntrees at the edge of TX35 again. There were still some singletons flying around looking for that special place to hang out before they took off to fly acros the bay to the WSW in the morning.
