Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 12/26/2011

Number: 1

We finally got some rain the last few weeks and the milkweed has come back just in time for the migration. We have been seeing in the school garden and my house gardens (across the street) adult Monarchs. They are feeding on the milkweed, lantana, and zinnias. They have been busy laying eggs even with our cool nights. We have had several nights near freezing and in the 40 degree range. Some of the tops of the milkweed have frost burn. Last week I counted 25 larva at my home butterfly garden, and at school we observed many caterpillars, several pupas, and adult butterflies. We observed 1 or 2 adult Monarchs daily in the afternoon.
