Over 25 monarchs are spending the winter at Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area in downtown Phoenix. All appear to be in diapause with no eggs or larvae observed on nearby milkweed as of 12/30/11. Main nectar is Seep Willow, Sweetbush (Bebbia juncea) and Wolfberry is now coming in bloom. Queen butterflies are in the area also, but monarchs outnumber them this year. They roost in nearby cottonwood and willow trees.
