After returning from our winter-holiday break, we took air and soil temperatures in our garden. We were surprised to find the tulip and daffodil beds to have soil temperatures cooler that the air temperature. Air 46.9 F and soil 44.4F. We asked what could have caused this when all our previous recordings were the opposite? Soil temps were always warmer than air temperatures. Was it due to a week of unusual warm days? Was it because we had several weeks in a row with no rain? We were not sure. Yet the results were that we had several daffodil buds emerge and one tulip bulb emerge in one of our experimental pots. Have other communities had similar findings? We are checking the maps later this week.
