Sightings report image

Date: 01/18/2012

Number: 1

As soon as I heard the weather forecast, I cancelled all activities, including an important luncheon date--and I'm glad I did because the temperature dropped to 10°F in the night and hovered around 16° for much of the morning. Our resident Anna's might have starved if I had not stayed at home. Even so, matters got dicy at times because the cold was accompanied by chilly northeasterly winds, with gusts peaking at 50mph. The feeders froze up about every fifteen minutes and had to replaced with fresh ones, with unfrozen nectar. Right now (at 13:30), the temperature has risen to 20°F and the feeders have to be changed only every half hour. But the hummers, all five of them, are surviving.
