Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 01/21/2012

Number: 1

Emerged from chrysalis early am, spent the day drying out. Should warm up today. About five more chrysalis left.

These monarch are outside in natural conditions - wild monarchs. We have had a mild winter than normal but when it got below freezing for a couple of days we covered the milkweed with drop cloths so the plants would not die. We had to purchase additional milkweed prior to Christmas as we had so many caterpillars we were running out of food. We have also aided a few chrysalis that have fallen and reattached them so the butterflies could mature.

Check on them every day, it has been a great family and learning experience. We hope to plant a butterfly garden for the spring.

We have about three chrysalis left and one caterpillar on the milkweed. Will keep posting.
