This is not a report of first sightings because loons winter in FL but just for information. Today 2 loons were found dead on the beach where I did a national shorebird survey (along with one immature Northern Gannet). I also found a loon on Monday washed up dead. Loons are being found extremely weak or dead along east coast Atlantic and the causes are unknown at this time. The weakened loons have been taken to a rehab hospital at Ponce Inlet, FL. The surf temperature is warmer this winter and we are unseasonally warm compared to the cold winter of last year. How all this plays is a question to puzzle on.
