We have really had a very warm winter here at Walden Pond so far. I had emailed you that January 19th , 2012, was our "ice in" date here at Walden Pond - but I have to say that within 10 days we had "ice out". I would put "ice out" at January 29th, 2012.

Right now (February 10th) there is very little ice at the pond, just around the shore and very thin elsewhere. In February, 2011, the Massachusetts State Police underwater recovery unit were training here and had to cut through 18 inches of ice to get into the water. This year, 2012, in February they really had no ice to practice going under.

I kept thinking that the pond would freeze again, but so far it has not .




So we have been enjoying the mild weather, but wondering what it means.
