Robins fill the skies around a farm one and a half miles west of the Village of Dolgeville. It was a nice sunny morning and they were out. They were accopanied by a large flock of waxings. A few robins were doing short burst of singing. Two days later it was cold with lake effect snow bands, but they still remain active in this area. They frequent this farm year after year during this time. I have been hearing the robins around the surrounding township as far back as mid January. I just didn't report them until I got a visual, because I have seen starlings mimick robin calls. This has been a very mild winter for upstate NY. I don't remember a winter as mild as this. Most farm fields along the Mohawk River are almost completely bare from Little Falls to Ilion. This is not normal. There have been days with unsual soaking rains. We have had several thaws where the temperatures would reach to the upper forties. One night felt almost like it was 50 out. there have been two many warm surges from the south. Only sheltered areas around Dolgeville retain snow, but the depth dosen't seem to exceed 3 inches. I went hiking in the Southern Adirondacks. I was surprised to see large portions of the south slope of Kane Mountain exposed. The north side obviously has a full covering, but it is a far cry from what it could be. Bottom Line there is a snow shortage here and maybe a winter that never was.
