Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/15/2012

Number: 1

I just sighted one (1) large, glorious Monarch Butterfly in my front yard, flying around the Butterfly Weed plants I have clustered in a pot. Its colors are bright, and it does not have any fading it its wings, so I doubt that it has been flying a long distance. I think it just recently emerged from its chrysalis. It feeds on the orange flowers and rests on the green leaves of the Butterfly Weeds and does not stray far, so I believe that it originated there. There are three or four other clumps of Butterfly Weeds in our kitchen patio, but Monarch has not yet gone there. The weather this winter has been warmer than usual and today the sun is shining brightly, with 71 degrees temperature so far at 1 pm. Yesterday it was close to 80 degrees. How thrilling!
