Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/18/2012

Number: 1

Having seen the reports of Milkweed sprouting in south Texas and along the coast, I have been wondering about emergence here in the Austin area.

No milkweed has emerged at way station number 917.

Last Saturday, I walked along the loop 360 road side adjacent to Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. I was unable to find any emerging milkweed.

Yesterday, while dancing between rain drops, I walked along the road side along 1826 near the Travis and Hays county line in an area where I have collected seeds from numerous antelope horns milkweed. Again, I found no evidence of emerging milkweed.

Normally at this time of year, I would expect to see evidence of last year's milkweed: Dried stems, dried out opened and even unopened pods. I did not see any. Best as I can figure, the few stems and pods from last year have been mowed several times erasing all evidence of the location of dormant plants.
