Tulips EMERGED

Date: 03/01/2012

Number: 1

Today was a beautiful day here in the mountains of North Carolina. The air temperature registered 73 degrees. We went to peak at the tulip bed and saw seven leaves trying to break through the dry ground. The soil was cracked and the green leaves were pushing through. Last years bed had leaves that were already up five to six inches. The students were questioning why last years bed came up so much sooner than this years bed. They came up with many great ideas. This really added to our discussion of the warm winter we have had so far. They were also worried about the weather turning cold again and what might happen to the small shoots. Many students predicted the older bed of tulips will dye if the weather turns cold and that maybe this years bed will make it through since they were used to being underground longer. This has been great for making predictions.
