It had rained the night before; when I went out for a morning walk (around 7:30 am) the path near my house was covered by a tragedy of hundreds of earthworms struggling to cross the asphalt.

(Sometime in the week before, I'm not sure when, my daughter Annie and I found worms under a paving stone, but the 1st was the first day I saw worms at the surface on their own.)
