Mourning Cloak butterflies are one of the first to be seen in the early spring as they spend the winter hibernating as adults. They often emerge on warm days.

A. Block of New Rochelle, New York, reported seeing one Mourning Cloak butterfly on February 23/12

On February 14th, B Stewart spotted one along Rt. 669 (Jewell Hollow Rd.), Luray, Page Co., Virginia.

On February 21st, W. Jacobs noted one on Fulmer Rd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
