Sightings report image

Date: 03/06/2012

Number: 1

We had a close call this morning. As I looked out the windows at dawn, I noticed that the Anna’s were hovering at the feeders but not drinking. I learned the reason as soon as I stepped outside: While the temperature only dropped to freezing, an unexpected ice storm (which was not in the night's forecast) dropped hail, sleet, and snow on us. The nectar in the feeders had not frozen, but several were deeply covered with snow or became so encrusted with ice that the birds could see the nectar but not drink. It took me quite some time to clean all sixteen of them off (while the hummers were buzzing me). Fortunately they survived the ordeal.
