Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/07/2012

Number: 1

I headed out to a local park along the shoreline of Lake Winnebago this morning around 9 am. I thought that with winds from the south overnight that early male blackbirds might have arrived. In the top of a small tree (25 feet) I spotted one holding on tightly with south winds at 20 miles per hour and gusts to 30 miles per hour. The sky was overcast and the temperature around 50F degrees. The lake is still frozen but there are open patches of water visible.

Drove about 4 miles north and spotted 3 more near the waters edge overlooking Asylum Bay. One was on a powerline and the others were in trees. They like to nest later in the nearby marsh.
