Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/11/2012

Number: 1

(this morning) March 11th was the first day we saw the red-winged blackbirds return to our pond behind our house. I have only spotted about 3 of them so far. The pond is roughly a third of an acre in size and typically has up to 2-3 dozen redwings breeding around it at it's peak. No sign of females arriving yet and the males are not yet taking notice to my feeder, but are foraging on the ground, particularly in my vegetable garden which I tilled in the fall. They may notice the feeder within hours as it has corn and sunflower seed material in it. We still have ice on the pond but it's in the 50's outside for the past 3 days and so there is now water sitting on the surface of the ice.
