Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/16/2012

Number: 1

We were out checking the Asclepias asperula in the pasture as soon as the dew had dried. Good flow of Monarchs thru pasture today! We were in northwest DeWitt County, TX, 70 miles east-southeast of San Antonio. Altus, my brother, and I started our count of Monarch butterflies at 9 am and stopped at 2 pm due to hunger. 59 Monarchs flying near us ... included 4 coupled pairs. Altus netted and we photo'd 7 ... they were still flying at 6:00 but the number was slimming down. Saw one going to roost on NW side of oak tree about 7:00. Started a bit earlier this year but conditions were great ... good amount of milkweed and wildflowers in the pasture. Really shouldn't say earlier because we've always reported multiple monarchs per hour by Mar 12th but never did a concentrated count this ... will have to do this kind of watching a few more years!
