Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 03/24/2012

Number: 1

We had a very busy day here in Driftwood this Saturday.

The weather was beautiful..clear blue sky, very light winds, and temperature of about 85

Everything is blooming and we had monarchs all day long.

Our wet weather creek is still flowing from the recent rains.

A constant flow of monarchs in the verbena...both male and female today.

At one point there were 7 in the field about 30 feet from our house.

They were soaring from flower to flower for long periods of time before moving on.

Had several pass thru flying low and moving rather quickly looking for something other than verbena.

The milkweed are getting another round of females laying eggs on them.

We watched one today, that in spite of the hot afternoon, made the rounds on at least 9-10 plants.

She then rested in our Red Bud tree before she disappeared to the north.

We have found several monarch larvae that have survived from the eggs almost 2 weeks ago now.

They are moving well and growing...noticing lots of holes appearing on our milkweed leaves.

Our milkweed from last year continues to grow and our new plants we bought this year are getting frequent visitation.

We have not seen any of the native milkweed that grows wild here in central Texas, it may be a few more weeks before it appears.
