35 caterpillars left two of my milkweed plants during the past five days. By 3/30 I had located 11 of them in various stages of forming into a chrysalis. Two of those died in the process. Five others-- all of which I saw complete the process - are now missing.
Watching the whole cycle, beginning with seeing the female lay her eggs, has been exhilarating, an experience I'm sorry I've never had before. And while I would have preferred to have done without the bitter reality that so few will ever become butterflies, I'm ready to plant more milkweed to get ready for the next cycle to begin. Bit by bit I hope to make our garden a safer place for those generations to come.
I'm grateful to this site for allowing us to share our experiences and to learn from others.
