"In the recorded history of the lake a March date had never occurred that anyone could remember. The closest had been April 3 in 2010 and the cold, latest had been May 17 in 1981.
"And as the Ely weather became unusually warm, reaching into the 70s, more folks looked to March as the probable date for Shagawa Lake Ice Out.
That afternoon a west wind had howled down the lake, moving the remaining ice and making it possible for a boat to cross from the GEL to the north shore, even though no boat was made to do so."
