Lake Winnipeg, South Basin, in Manitoba

"The dean of Gimli-area fishermen on Lake Winnipeg says the ice on the south basin of the big lake has broken up earlier this year in any previous year he can recall.

Robert Kristjanson's family has been commercial fishing on the lake for more than 120 years.

'In my time I have never seen it as early,' said Kristjanson, 78.

'In 1951 [the ice] went out very early but not this early.'"
