Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/14/2012

Number: 1

Saturday evening we released the first (a female) of our new butterflies. Then yesterday (04/15/12) 4 more females and 3 males joined the community of free fliers. We have 6 more chrysalis, 5 that should emerge today, and a sixth one that is still bright green. Somewhere 5 of our caterpillars escaped, but the haven't yet shown up in our jaloused breezeway, though one sort of exoskeleton is hanging on one the panes outside. It looks like maybe a bird attacked it as it was metamorphising as there's a glob of black mass on the concrete below, with sort of a chrysalis looking cap in the midst of it, and the shed skin drawn out about two inches dangling from the cremaster!

Ironically, the six (6) chrysalis we distributed amongst our 10 grandkids haven't emerged yet, which is unfortunate as the kids will probably be in school today when that happens. Maybe they'll take their "travel boxes" with them though, and share this awesome experience with classmates...if their parents will let them (or even the teachers!)
