Report date: 04/21/12 - The monarchs are in Nebraska this week as you state. Milkweed has not emerged in the Monarch Butterfly Habitat, a restored remnant tallgrass prairie, that our nonprofit, Happy Tonics, Inc., implemented on 1/2 acre of city land in Shell Lake, WI.
I saw a red admiral as you reported. We have been receiving calls form others who state that they have seen the monarch. I know that the monarchs are not in Northwest Wisconsin yet. I suggested that they have been seeing the red admiral.
Learning about butterfly species is a science. As executive director of a nonprofit environmental education organization, I love to work with the monarch butterfly.
