Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

WOOHOO! My hummers are back!!! I hung out three nectar feeders about 10 days ago. I have refreshed the nectar once and will do so again tomorrow morning. Today, at approximately 5pm, I just happened to look out my patio doors and perched on one of my two nectar feeders hanging from the underside of my covered patio was a Rubythroated hummingbird. This is the beginning of my third season feeding hummingbirds. Up until three years ago I had never seen a hummingbird in my part of Kansas (north central Kansas). My sister, who lives in southeast Kansas, encouraged me to try attracting hummingbirds with nectar feeders. My sister has been an avid feeder of hummingbirds for several years. As the "season" gets going, I will hang out more nectar feeders because competition gets fierce. I consider my back yard a wildlife habitat since my back yard provides shelter, food, and fresh water for many animals, including hummingbirds. I took a photo, through my patio door, with my cell phone of my first hummingbird sighting for Spring 2012. She is perched on the right side of the nectar feeder... you may have to zoom in to see her. Like many other parts of the USA, we have been treated to a rare early Spring here in Kansas, but I am still amazed to see a hummingbird this early in the year at my nectar feeder.
