Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 04/24/2012

Number: 1

Our weather continues to be beautiful. Daily warm temps with cool nights. But the vegetation is beginning to show early signs of drying out somewhat.

Rainfall has diminished and the early wildflowers are giving way to the next wave of spring growth.

A noticeable shift of 1st generation monarchs now dominates most of our observations for the past several days.

We still see an occasional traveler from Mexico still faded and tattered from their journey.

They tend to have problems with the breezes that are blowing and make frequent rest stops.

We saw a female braving the winds that almost had transparent wings.

The 1st generation monarchs are everywhere and we see newly emerged monarchs almost every morning.

Their colors are so brilliant and they contrast so dramatically with the landscape around them.

Quite a joy to watch them discover the fine art of flying.

The milkweed of all varieties is being devoured by numerous late stage caterpillars. They are fairly easy to spot because of their size.
