Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/25/2012

Number: 1

Today (April 25) I saw the second Monarch of the year flying due north near the Genetics Building, Iowa State University, Ames at 3:46 p.m. I was getting ready to plant prairie plants and, while I was walking out to our new prairie patch, I looked up to see the butterfly fly about 5 feet over my head. This butterfly was worn, even more so than the first Monarch I saw two days ago.

The temperature was 84 F, dewpoint temperature, 57 F, and there were large cumulus clouds over about 2/3 of the sky. Wind was from the north, 5 – 7 mph. Conditions are becoming more humid and unsettled than they were during the previous two days.
