Lake Sabrina, in the Sierra Mountains, near Bishop, California
"'Folks are going to be surprised when they see the lake,' said Rick Apted, who runs the concession and boat rentals at Lake Sabrina, west of Bishop. 'On Wednesday we went totally ice free.'
This is Apted's 39th trout opener at Sabrina. He said this is only the third or fourth time the lake has been ice-free in that period. Sabrina is at 9,138 feet, an indication that Eastern Sierra waters below that elevation likely will be ice-free for the opener.
'I don't think I've ever seen rain up here this high in April,' Smith said. 'There's very little snow. The road to South Lake is ice- and snow-free. The conditions look more like it's Memorial Day than the trout opener.'"
