Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/23/2012

Number: 1

Great week!! I my garden I use 4 Firebushes and 1 Jatropa to attract hummers.

3 important (to my class) 1st time observations in our school garden!

1st: Daily sightings of male(s) ruby throated hummers throughout the day everyday this week. The last time a male was sighted was about 5 years ago.

2nd: All this week all day long multiple birds as much as 6 hummers at a time in our small garden. We would usually see only one bird. A few would be chasing the others away but they would come back. We know this could be territorial behavior.

3rd: We learned to identify all the hummers' sounds! We have never heard this in the wild only on recordings.

After a week or two of many bummers I've only seen them sparingly this week and only one female at a time.
