I was in Iowa last Saturday and found a fresh monarch wing at Conard Environmental Research Area, a365 acres prairie habitat owned by Grinnell College. The wing was of a fresh male, and was found in grass in the prairie. There is no doubt that this monarch was snatched by a bird. Prof. Jackie Dawson, who manages the Prairie, told me that the oak forest savanna habitat adjacent to the prairie is a haven for birds. The fact that the wing was fresh indicates that it was born, likely in Texas, a week or so earlier.

My host, Jackie Brown, said he saw a monarch flying in his home yard in Grinnell on Sunday 29 April.
