Brandon and Eric Holden, and Ken Burrell, reported that yesterday (5/2), they spotted 15+ monarchs on Pelee Island, along with other species including variegated fritillary (5) and common buckeye(8).
At least 7 today, and all were EXTREMELY FRESH. Thus they are from the "transit brood" having been produced somewhere along the way such as maybe Arkansas. Previous record early date for transit brood at Point Pelee is May 21 (1999), although I don't have all my notes handy. So overall it is a very early year indeed! At least one today was arriving direct from Lake Erie, so late today there should be many more than just the 7 that we saw this morning.
