An afternoon visit to Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge southeast of Des Moines resulted in sightings of several monarchs. Staff indicated they started seeing them about a week ago. The milkweed is about a foot tall. There is a butterfly garden and acres of prairie. The monarchs I saw didn't stop long, but kept heading north, with the southwesterly breeze.
