Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/03/2012

Number: 1

Our first ruby throat showed up at about 1 pm. He buzzed the area where our feeder had hung for several years and seemed to be waiting for it to be put up. My wife hurried to prepare the sugar syrup and hang the feeder in its spot.

The instant it was hung, he began feeding, barely giving my wife a chance to retreat.

Last year we spotted several very tiny ruby throats, the size of bumble bees, but this male was wren sized and his neckerchief was brilliant red.
