Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/05/2012

Number: 1

Just about on time, but expected them earlier this year due to the mild winter and early spring weather. Just got back from a two day trip to north central and central Iowa and found that there are quite a few fields planted already and even saw some corn plants that looked to be a couple inches tall already. I know that 5/10 is supposed to be the drop dead last frost date for us around here but apparently some farmers have enough fait that they planted early and hopefully they will reap the benefit of their faith. If any of you readers get up this way be sure to stop and see the Freedom Rock just 1 mile south of the 86 mile marker on I-80. See it at www.freedomrock.com . By the way, the first rose breasted grosbeaks showed up here yesterday also.
