Earliest-Ever Monarch Sighting -- in 22 years of monitoring the Upper Delaware River Valley! As I stepped from a car to photograph the river, near Callicoon NY, a monarch kept flitting into the swale of a railraod embankment -- without alighting. (Local milkweed, alas, is still dormant.) It was 1:00 p.m., sunny and warm, but the buterfly didn't sail or glide as "fresh" monarchs will; wings were faded tho not tattered. I never observe adult monarchs up here until Memorial Day; and seldom before July in this century.
