Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/06/2012

Number: 1

The eggs that were left are turning into caterpillars...some I brought in to protect and there are some on the plants....an egg is turning outside, so that was laid either May 1st or 2nd, so not too much extra time like last in the years for it to hatch, when they were here early. It was much colder and we had frost in the past. This year, they came after the bitter frost and the mulching helped protect the plants from the snow...they showed up a week later...good timing..going out with a friend and see if any more were laid along the road...thankfully the road spraying got delayed and they didn't spray...may try and gather up some more common milkweed....seems I don't have as much in the yard as usual...I know there was some kind of virus and I was digging out the bad ones and throwing them away...so maybe that is why we don't have as much...also the winter was much milder than usual, so maybe the seeds didn't get conditioned enough...
