First hummer sighting was Sun 5/6/12. I just happened to look out my deck door, and he just flew up - he came right up to my deck and hovered where the feeder is every year. I had not put it up thinking it was just a little too early yet this far north...so I ran in to fill it, put it out and within 5 minutes he was back. Yesterday it rained all day, and the little guy made himself at home, sitting on the arm of my deck glider, just a few feet away from the feeder, under the protetion of the roof! A few minutes ago, I noticed him sitting in a nearby tree, on the outer branch, watching the feeder. He is very territorial!
I now have 2 hummers and the first chases the newbie away. But the newbie manages to get his time at the feeder anyway! I have been trying since he got here to get pictures, but he is too quick and crafty! It took two days for me to get this picture that I submitted! I won't give up though - I've got all summer!
I wish I had more hummingbirds, but we never get more than 4 hummers in a season at one time. We live on Lake George, in upstate New York.
