Monarch Egg (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/09/2012

Number: 1

There was a very busy female monarch in my milkweed patch today. I watched her deposit her eggs on the tiny common milkweed plants which are only a few inches high. After she left, I collected 30 eggs, which I brought inside to raise. Some of the eggs were placed very low on the stem of the plant; these I left in place, as I didn't want to clip the plant off at the base. The rabbits are doing enough of that as it is. I even found one egg on the butterfly weed, which is barely above the ground. Don't know how the monarch managed to find that plant in amongst all the other plants!

Every day I find more common milkweed plants poking up through the soil. Looks like I will have plenty of leaves for food in the coming weeks.
