On 5/6 I spotted a faded monarch near Callicoon NY, weeks before they generally turn-up. Today,5/12, a faded monarch entered our garden, flitting a foot above ground. Happily enough spear-like milkweed shoots had pushed-thru that she found 7 to lay eggs on. Most plants were 1" to 3" high, coated with grit from recent rains. On the tiniest the egg was fastened about 1/4" above soil level. 2011 DATA : saw the 1st monarch on July 11; also found 4 eggs that day, my first.
