Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/11/2012

Number: 1

I found an adult male Ruby Throat on the ground in my garden inside a coil of hose. He was very still and did not move when I approached him. It was 4:00 PM on a sunny afternoon so I did not think he was in a normal transe. I picked him up gently and moved him to a flat, open area and set him down. He attempted to fly but only gat about 6 inches high and about 3 feet away. I tried this 3 times with the same results. He did not seem to have a fear of me and appeared to like the warmth and safety of being held in my partially closed hand. While in my hand he ate from flowers and from a humbird feeder. I have him in a box with grass, sticks, flowers and the feeder. Will he get better or will he probably die before he can regain his flying ability? Should I do anything else for him?
