Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/22/2012

Number: 1

Spotted our first emerged larvae last Saturday (05/19/12)...a couple in the blackberry patch on the back hill and a couple on the first emerged milkweed by the garage (grapevine patch).
Since then, there have been caterpillars emerging every day. Filmed one yesterday that was pushed out of it's half eaten eggshell but saved itself by its silken thread (twice). This week's Monarch report says that only 10% make it past stage one.......I definitely believe that is true.
Lots of eggs on almost all of the milkweed plants here; hope to have a good hatch and survival rate, but we'll see.
Pasture milkweed still mostly not out of the ground yet; I suspect it's a different variety, but it looks the same to me.
It'll be the main source for some later hatches.
Still seeing Monarchs, both male and female; some eggs still being laid, I believe.
