While on the trail of an early monarch female, I scared up a sandhill crane male. He went west, so I back-tracked east along the canal. Much to my surprise I came across a funny red-brown "bump" on the north side of the canal. As I watched from a distance, the bump grew a head and neck. It was a female sandhill on her nest. I took several photos from a distance and then continued my butterfly stalking. Got my first photo of a buckeye a few minutes later.
