Kayaking solo on the upper Wando River near Awendaw, SC on Saturday June 9, 1012. Although I have been on this river many times, I have not ventured this far up before. I started hearing a bird "screaching" from the west at a distance and thought it sounded like an eagle. We have many birds of prey around here including many osprey. I thought to myself, it is not an osprey, but it sounded what I have heard on TV as an eagle. Dismissing this, I continued on. In a matter of minutes I see a very large bird fly from the top of a tall pine tree just on the river bank. There was no mistaking that it was a bald eagle, but not the one I was hearing. For I could hear the "screaching" in the distance as the eagle I saw flew away. I know of eagles around the Charleston area as one lives in a populous area on James Island, but this sighting was special because I believe there is a mating pair there.
