Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/12/2012

Number: 1

Our zoo monarchs have been producing steadily, the main thing I have noticed is that they have gotten much larger in the last month. At least 1/3 larger than before, makes them look clumsy getting in and out of the flowers and milkweed. The caterpillars seem to be growing to the same size as ever before going to chrysalis, don’t know what it is. The rainy season has started with a frenzy, 3 days after you mow its grown out again. The caterpillars haven’t been able to strip the milkweed as it is out-growing them, so they have had a constant source of food.
I added a corky stem passionvine to the butterfly garden and had my first zebra longwing caterpillars and some fritillary butterfly visitors. I have only seen one queen butterfly this spring, and no caterpillars, last year we had a lot of those.
