Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/25/2012

Number: 1

I examined my milkweed bed today and sorry to say we do not have any Monarch catapillars to report. It's been quite balmy and dry in Central Virginia. I have been watering my flowers to provide a way station for butterflies of all types to drink. I have observed plenty of yellow and black swallowtails and the white northerns & yellow sulphurs. I have a plant called "snow in the mountain" which attracts plenty of butterflies. The little white ones roost there at night! We had a long standing dry period with plenty of heat stressed plants. A large thunderstorm passed through here yesterday bring a much needed shower! I fear the heat wave the rest of the country is experiencing may affect Monarch population by reducing thier food source. Whenever you can spare some water for the flowers for the butterflies!
