Sightings report image

Date: 08/07/2012

Number: 1000

I've never seen anything like this in the 30 years I've lived in Montreal. Flying west to east pattern and every 5-10 seconds another group of at least 5 butterflies would go whizzing by. Could call it 'playing tag' if you wanted to. Had to drive to work and try to avoid hitting 100's if not thousands on a 4km stretch (yes I use metric :)). Never realised this phenomenon existed until today, quite extraordinary.

Editor's Note: The butterflies were later identified as Painted Ladies.
