Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 08/17/2012

Number: 2

Female and male flying though the back yard landing on milkweed.

We have had Monarch activity all summer long. Much more activity than last summer (2011) during the drought. Most days I had several Monarchs and Swallowtails in my yard, and the same observations at the Bales Intermediate butterfly garden. They were mating and laying eggs. In our area the larva have two predictors, the red wasp and green anole lizard. Several times I saw mature larva grabbed and eaten by one of these two. Many citizens in the area have planted the tropical milkweed in their yards, so there is a lot of host plants for the migrating Monarchs. Since we have had rain all summer there is flowers still blooming and nectar for the butterflies in our area. School starts next week so my students will be on the watch in our school garden! We also will also participate in the great migration.
