What a summer for monarchs! We saw our first on May 30th then experienced a lull until the next generation appeared. Beginning on June 28th we suddenly began to see adults regularly. Daily counts were from 3 to 7 adult monarchs--compared to the 1 or 2 a week we would see in a typical summer. Eggs and larvae were also easy to find this year. In fact, it was hard to collect milkweed for the monarchs we were raising without bringing in more eggs and larvae. Activity was high from late June to about July 20th, since then we have counted about 1-2 per day. Now that it's late August, we are again seeing larger numbers. Today, August 19th, we counted 5 adults over the course of the day so that's the number I'm reporting.
